Guardiola Could Not Believe Man City Dominance in EFL Cup Final Win Over Arsenal
Manchester City secured a 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the EFL Cup final at Wembley, delivering a second-half performance that even Pep Guardiola admitted surprised him. City’s triumph was powered by two headed goals from Nico O’Reilly, sealing another major trophy for Guardiola and further cementing his legacy in English football.
With this win, Guardiola became the first manager to win the EFL Cup five times, surpassing legendary figures like Brian Clough, Sir Alex Ferguson, and José Mourinho. It also marked his 13th major domestic trophy with Manchester City, highlighting the club’s continued dominance under his leadership.
The first half saw City control possession with 60.8%, but they struggled to create clear chances, registering no shots on target and only 0.33 expected goals (xG).
However, the game changed completely after the break. City increased their intensity and attacking threat, finishing with:
- 63% possession in second half
- 8 shots compared to Arsenal’s 5
- 1.18 xG vs Arsenal’s 1.17 xG
Reflecting on the performance, Guardiola said:
“Second half, I could not believe we could do that against Arsenal, but we did it.”
Despite the victory, Guardiola downplayed its impact on the Premier League title race, where City remain nine points behind Arsenal with a game in hand.
He emphasized that the EFL Cup and league campaign are separate challenges:
“It will have no impact. It is a different competition.”
Instead, Guardiola is already looking ahead to City’s FA Cup quarter-final clash against Liverpool on April 4, aiming to continue their strong run in domestic competitions.
Although Arsenal missed out on the trophy, they remain in a strong position in the Premier League. Guardiola acknowledged their consistency this season and admitted that City must win their remaining matches and hope for slip-ups.
Manchester City’s dominant second-half display showcased their ability to rise in big moments. While the EFL Cup triumph adds another trophy to Guardiola’s collection, the focus now shifts to the Premier League and FA Cup battles ahead, where the real test of the season continues.
