Turkey Ends 24-Year Wait, Secures FIFA World Cup 2026 Spot
Turkey has ended a 24-year absence from the FIFA World Cup by defeating Kosovo 1–0 in a tense play-off match held in Pristina. The victory marks Turkey’s return to the World Cup for the first time since 2002, when they finished third, their best-ever performance in the tournament.
The match-winning moment came in the 53rd minute when Fenerbahce striker Kerem Akturkoglu capitalized on a chance created by Orkun Kokcu’s pass to Kenan Yildiz. Akturkoglu’s precise finish from close range proved decisive, as Turkey held on to claim victory. Kosovo came close to taking the lead in the first half when Fisnik Asllani’s shot struck the bar and went out, but the hosts could not convert their chances.
Turkey, ranked 23rd in FIFA rankings, featured stars such as Arda Guler of Real Madrid and Hakan Calhanoglu of Inter Milan, making them pre-match favorites. Kosovo, a young football nation that became FIFA and UEFA members in 2016, narrowly missed the chance to qualify for their first major tournament, finishing behind Turkey despite an impressive play-off semi-final win against Slovakia.
With this win, Turkey will join Group C in the 2026 World Cup alongside hosts the United States, Paraguay, and Australia. The team has been in strong form recently, reaching the Euro 2024 quarter-finals and showing a blend of experienced players and emerging talent, which proved crucial in securing this long-awaited World Cup berth.
While Turkey celebrates a historic return, Kosovo’s dream of making their World Cup debut remains unfulfilled, highlighting the challenges for newer footballing nations in breaking onto the global stage.
