Federico Valverde Hat-Trick Powers Real Madrid to 3-0 Win Over Manchester City
Madrid — Federico Valverde delivered a memorable performance as Real Madrid defeated Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 match at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Uruguayan midfielder scored three goals within 22 minutes in the first half, putting Madrid firmly in control of the tie despite the absence of injured star Kylian Mbappé.
Manchester City began the match aggressively and dominated possession in the opening minutes. However, Madrid struck first when goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a long clearance that caught the City defense off guard. Valverde chased the ball, rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted home the opening goal.
Seven minutes later, Valverde doubled the lead with a powerful left-footed strike after collecting a deflected pass from Vinícius Júnior. The Madrid captain completed his hat-trick with a brilliant volley from close range after receiving a delicate lobbed pass from Brahim Díaz.
Real Madrid nearly added a fourth goal early in the second half when Vinícius Júnior won a penalty, but his attempt was saved by City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. City pushed forward in search of a goal but struggled to create clear chances, while Madrid remained dangerous on the counterattack.
With a commanding three-goal advantage, Real Madrid now head into the second leg as strong favorites to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.
