The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) have reached a landmark political unity agreement. A seven-point agreement was signed at around 4:00 AM, marking a significant shift in Nepal’s alternative political movement.
As per the agreement, Rabi Lamichhane will continue as the Chairperson of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, while Mayor Balendra Shah will be presented as the party’s future Prime Ministerial candidate following the next House of Representatives election. The party’s election symbol will remain the bell, and the party name and flag will also continue unchanged. The agreement was formally signed by RSP Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane and Mayor Balendra Shah.
Key Highlights of the Seven-Point Agreement:
1. The unified force commits to taking ownership of the youth-led movement against corruption and poor governance, while addressing the demands of injured protesters and families of martyrs.
2. A shared roadmap has been adopted to transform Nepal into a respectable middle-income country within the next decade through deep policy, institutional, and structural reforms.
3. After unification, the party will retain the name Rastriya Swatantra Party, the bell as its election symbol, and its central office will remain in the Kathmandu Valley.
4. Rabi Lamichhane will remain the central chairperson, while Balendra Shah will serve as the parliamentary party leader and Prime Ministerial candidate after the next general election.
5. Party responsibilities will be distributed by integrating youth activists and experienced professionals based on merit, inclusiveness, and public trust.
6. All official documents of the party will be updated at the Election Commission in line with the agreement.
7. The party calls upon other reform-oriented political forces, groups, and individuals to unite under the RSP’s leadership and election symbol to promote good governance, prosperity, and social justice.
This agreement is being viewed as a major step toward strengthening alternative politics in Nepal and consolidating reformist forces under a unified vision.
