Brighton 2-1 Liverpool , Welbeck Brace Hits Reds’ Champions League Hopes

Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Liverpool 2-1 at the Amex Stadium, with Danny Welbeck scoring twice. Liverpool’s top-four hopes are in jeopardy as Brighton strengthen their push for Europe.

Brighton & Hove Albion secured a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, dealing a significant blow to Liverpool’s top-four ambitions while boosting their own European prospects. Danny Welbeck’s double proved decisive for the Seagulls, as Liverpool struggled without several key players.

The win marked Brighton’s fourth victory in five league games, matching the number of wins they had in their previous 18 Premier League matches. The result moved them up to eighth place, just six points off the top five, keeping their European qualification hopes alive.

Welbeck opened the scoring in the 14th minute after a quick Brighton attack saw Ferdi Kadioglu cross to Diego Gómez, who headed the ball back for Welbeck to finish. This goal was Welbeck’s 11th Premier League goal of the season, his personal best in a single campaign. It was also Gómez’s first Premier League assist in his 44th appearance.

Liverpool responded on the half-hour mark through Milos Kerkez, capitalizing on sloppy play at the back. However, Brighton regained the lead just ten minutes into the second half, with Welbeck tapping in from a Jack Hinshelwood deflection, following a sublime pass from Yankuba Minteh. A lengthy VAR check confirmed the goal was onside.

Liverpool struggled without Alisson, Mohamed Salah, and Hugo Ekitiké, who was forced off just eight minutes into the game. The absence of key attackers left them unable to break down Brighton’s defense, despite chances created by Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones. Giorgi Mamardashvili, deputizing in goal for the injured Alisson, made several crucial saves, while Brighton’s goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen also kept his side in control with key stops, including a fine save from Alexis Mac Allister’s header.

The defeat was Liverpool’s 10th loss of the season, equaling their highest number of Premier League defeats since 2015-16. With this result, their Champions League qualification is in serious jeopardy, while Brighton continue to dream of European football next season.
