Chelsea 2-2 Hull City: Joao Pedro Rescues Point for Blues

Chelsea were forced to settle for a point after coming from behind to draw 2-2 with Hull City in the Premier League, with Joao Pedro playing a decisive role for the hosts.

The Brazilian forward provided the assist for Chelsea’s opener and later scored the equaliser as the Blues once again struggled to protect a lead under head coach Xabi Alonso.

Rogers Gives Chelsea Early Advantage

Chelsea made a fast start at Stamford Bridge, taking the lead after just seven minutes.

Joao Pedro created the opportunity for Morgan Rogers, who found space before driving a low shot beyond goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis and into the near corner.

The goal also ended Hull’s run of not conceding in the league this season, but Chelsea were unable to maintain control of the contest.

Belloumi Turns the Game Around

Hull responded impressively and produced a remarkable turnaround before the interval.

Mohamed Belloumi levelled the contest after capitalising on a defensive mistake. Ryan Giles' looping delivery caused confusion in the Chelsea defence, with Jorrel Hato misjudging the ball and Belloumi taking full advantage to beat Emiliano Martinez.

Just six minutes later, Belloumi struck again.

Oli McBurnie created the opportunity after Semi Ajayi's header came back off the crossbar, allowing Belloumi to complete his brace and put Hull ahead.

The visitors went into half-time with a 2-1 advantage despite Chelsea having started the match strongly.

Joao Pedro Restores Chelsea's Parity

Chelsea pushed for a response after the break and came close through Reece James, whose free-kick required an excellent save from Tzolakis as the goalkeeper tipped the effort away from the top corner.

Chelsea eventually found their equaliser in the 66th minute.

Cole Palmer delivered the final pass across the area, and Joao Pedro unleashed a powerful finish to make it 2-2.

The goal completed an influential performance from the forward, who had already registered an assist earlier in the match.

Hull Nearly Snatch a Famous Victory

The visitors continued to threaten despite Chelsea's pressure.

Hull came close to reclaiming the lead in the closing stages when Mohamed-Ali Cho found an opportunity inside the Chelsea area, but he was unable to beat Martinez.

Chelsea then appealed for a penalty during stoppage time after Estevao's cross appeared to strike the hand of Semi Ajayi. The referee rejected the appeal, leaving the two teams to share the points.

Chelsea Continue to Struggle With Game Management

The result adds to concerns surrounding Chelsea's ability to manage matches after taking the lead.

Chelsea's opening two Premier League home fixtures of the 2026-27 season have already produced 11 goals, with the Blues scoring six and conceding five. It is the highest combined goal total in their first two home top-flight matches since the 1997-98 campaign.

Chelsea had also needed strong comebacks and late efforts to overcome Fulham and Brighton before losing to Arsenal after Rogers scored the opening goal.

Their midweek 6-3 EFL Cup victory over Leeds United followed a similar pattern, with Chelsea once again conceding first before recovering.

Chelsea Drop More Points From Winning Positions

Chelsea's inability to close out matches remains a growing concern.

According to Opta's win-probability model, Chelsea had an 89.1% chance of winning after Rogers put them ahead. However, Hull quickly turned the match around before Chelsea eventually rescued a draw.

The Blues have now dropped five points from winning positions in the Premier League this season.

That statistic will be particularly frustrating for a Chelsea side that entered the campaign with ambitions of challenging near the top of the table.

Belloumi Makes Premier League History

Despite Hull failing to secure all three points, Mohamed Belloumi enjoyed a standout afternoon.

His first-half brace made him the first visiting player to score twice in the opening half of a Premier League match at Stamford Bridge since Matheus Pereira did so for West Bromwich Albion in April 2021.

For Hull, the performance will provide plenty of encouragement as they continue their return to the Premier League.
