The game took a decisive turn early in extra time when Wrexham midfielder George Dobson was shown a red card following a VAR review for a challenge on Alejandro Garnacho, leaving the hosts with ten men.
Chelsea took advantage of the numerical superiority almost immediately. Garnacho scored in the 96th minute to give the Blues their first lead of the night.
