Nepali Community Brings Biska Jatra to Life in London Park with Grand Cultural Celebration

A London park turned into a vibrant celebration of Biska Jatra as the Nepali community showcased traditional Newari culture, rituals, and performances.

A public park in the UK recently turned into a vibrant hub of Nepali tradition as the community came together to celebrate the iconic Biska Jatra in London. The event transformed Central Park Dartford into a lively showcase of Newar heritage, culture, and festive spirit.

A Colorful Display of Newari Culture

The celebration brought a stunning visual experience, with participants dressed in traditional Newari attire. Women wore elegant outfits such as hakupatasi, complemented by cultural jewelry like silver necklaces, earrings, and anklets. Men appeared in classic daura suruwal paired with coats and traditional topi, adding to the authenticity of the event.

The atmosphere was filled with the rhythmic sounds of traditional instruments like dhimay, dha baja, and flutes, creating an immersive cultural environment that transported attendees straight to the streets of Bhaktapur.

London Hosts a Mini Bhaktapur

Organized by Pasa Puchah Guthi UK in collaboration with the Embassy of Nepal in London, the event successfully recreated the essence of Biska Jatra in the heart of London.

The turnout exceeded expectations, with the venue hosting close to 2,800 attendees despite having a capacity of around 2,500. The overwhelming response highlighted the growing enthusiasm for Nepali cultural events abroad.

Traditional Rituals and Processions

One of the main attractions was the traditional chariot procession of Bhairav and Bhadrakali, recreated in the UK. The symbolic pulling and eventual “collision” of the chariots marked a key ritual of the festival.

The ceremonial raising of the yosin (lingo) was also performed, maintaining the authenticity of the original celebration from Bhaktapur.

Processions featuring various deities, accompanied by music and traditional performances, added to the festive energy throughout the day.

Cultural Performances and Festive Highlights

The event featured multiple traditional dances and performances, including:

  • Bhairav gana nach
  • Dhime nach
  • Gorkhali takatuke nach

The celebration also included the vibrant sindur jatra, where colors and joy filled the environment, creating a lively and festive mood.

Musical performances using traditional instruments such as nay khin, khin, ponga, and mridanga further enriched the cultural experience.

Food, Community, and Celebration

Visitors enjoyed a variety of authentic Newari dishes along with several stalls offering cultural items and food. The event was not just a festival but a community gathering that brought people together to celebrate heritage, identity, and tradition.

Growing Popularity of Biska Jatra in the UK

This marked the third edition of Biska Jatra in the United Kingdom, following previous celebrations in 2022 and 2024. Each year, the festival continues to grow in scale and popularity, reflecting the strong cultural connection of the Nepali diaspora.

The successful celebration of Biska Jatra in London highlights how traditions can thrive beyond borders. By recreating the essence of Bhaktapur’s historic festival, the Nepali community has once again demonstrated the power of culture in uniting people across the world.
