Leeds United Edge West Ham in Penalty Drama to Reach FA Cup Semi-Final
Leeds United secured a historic place in the FA Cup semi-finals after defeating West Ham United 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out, following a dramatic 2-2 draw after extra time in a thrilling quarter-final clash.
Leeds looked set for a comfortable victory after taking a 2-0 lead, with goals from Ao Tanaka and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Tanaka opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a well-worked team move, while Calvert-Lewin doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 75th minute.
However, the match took a stunning turn in stoppage time. West Ham mounted a remarkable comeback as Mateus Fernandes capitalized on a rebound in the 93rd minute, before Axel Disasi equalized just minutes later, sending the game into extra time.
Extra time delivered more drama, with West Ham creating several big chances but seeing two goals ruled out for offside. Leeds also came close to scoring again, but both teams were unable to find a winner, forcing the match into penalties.
In the shoot-out, Leeds held their nerve, converting their chances with precision. Goalkeeper Lucas Perri emerged as the hero, saving crucial attempts from Jarrod Bowen and Pablo, while Leeds successfully converted their kicks to seal a 4-2 victory.
The match also saw an unexpected moment as West Ham were forced to bring on 20-year-old goalkeeper Finlay Herrick for his debut after Alphonse Areola suffered an injury late in the game. Although Herrick made an early save in the shoot-out, it was not enough to prevent Leeds from progressing.
Statistically, the game was closely contested, with both teams registering over 20 shots. West Ham slightly edged the expected goals (xG), but Leeds showed composure when it mattered most.
This victory marks Leeds United’s first FA Cup semi-final appearance since 1987, ending a 39-year wait and keeping their hopes alive for a historic cup run.
