Fulham 2-3 Chelsea Palmer, Rogers and Joao Pedro Shine as Alonso Starts With Victory

Chelsea opened the Xabi Alonso era with a 3-2 win over Fulham as Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro starred in an entertaining London derby at Craven Cottage.

Chelsea began the Xabi Alonso era with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage, as Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro combined to give the Blues a winning start in the Premier League.

Chelsea's new-look attacking trio made an immediate impact, with Palmer and Joao Pedro both scoring and assisting, while Rogers marked his Premier League debut for the club with a goal.

Joao Pedro Scores After Just 31 Seconds

Chelsea needed just 31 seconds to take the lead.

Cole Palmer played a perfectly weighted pass through to Joao Pedro, who remained composed before lifting the ball over Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

The goal was Chelsea's fastest Premier League goal since 2016 and the earliest goal scored by any team in the opening match of a Premier League campaign.

However, Fulham quickly responded.

Fulham Level Through Josh King

Fulham showed plenty of attacking intent under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa and equalised in the 23rd minute.

Josh King's effort looked manageable for Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but the Spaniard failed to hold the shot, allowing the ball to find the back of the net.

Sanchez endured a difficult evening and appeared uncertain on several occasions throughout the match.

Rogers Puts Chelsea Back in Front

Chelsea regained the lead four minutes before half-time.

Maxence Lacroix produced an impressive piece of play to create the opportunity for Morgan Rogers, who finished emphatically to score his first goal for Chelsea.

The £117 million signing immediately demonstrated why Chelsea invested heavily in bringing him to Stamford Bridge.

Rogers was also involved in Chelsea's third goal shortly after half-time.

Palmer Extends Chelsea's Lead

Rogers flicked the ball forward to Joao Pedro, who held off the Fulham defence before setting up Cole Palmer.

Palmer made no mistake, producing a composed finish underneath Leno to put Chelsea 3-1 ahead.

Both Palmer and Joao Pedro had now scored and assisted in the same match, highlighting the chemistry developing between Chelsea's attacking players.

Fulham Fight Back Through Gonzalo Garcia

Fulham refused to give up and pulled a goal back in the 54th minute.

Gonzalo Garcia, making his Premier League debut, reacted quickest after Sanchez parried Timothy Castagne's shot into a dangerous area and headed into an empty net.

The goal gave Fulham hope of completing a comeback.

Chelsea, however, managed to withstand the pressure.

Antonee Robinson later found himself through on goal but could only lob his attempt wide. Rodrigo Muniz then forced Sanchez into a save with the final kick of the game.

Chelsea also had a fourth goal ruled out when Joao Pedro was flagged offside.

Chelsea's Front Three Make a Statement

The biggest positive for Alonso was the performance of Chelsea's attacking trio.

Morgan Rogers

Rogers scored on his Premier League debut for Chelsea and delivered an impressive all-round performance.

He recorded three shots and created four chances in the first half, becoming the first Chelsea player on record since 2003/04 to achieve both figures in the opening half of his Premier League debut.

He also became the first Chelsea player on record to create five chances on his Premier League debut.

Cole Palmer

After a difficult 2025/26 campaign by his usual standards, Palmer looked back to his best.

His assist for Joao Pedro's opener was exceptional, while his own goal demonstrated his trademark composure in front of goal.

Since making his Premier League debut for Chelsea in September 2023, Palmer has scored and assisted in nine Premier League matches. Only Mohamed Salah and Ollie Watkins have done so more often during that period.

Joao Pedro

Joao Pedro was another standout performer.

The Brazilian forward scored Chelsea's opener, assisted Palmer for the third goal and constantly threatened the Fulham defence.

He recorded four shots, second only to Palmer's five, while also creating two chances.

His strong opening performance could put him firmly into the conversation for the Premier League Golden Boot this season.

Alonso Begins Chelsea Career With Three Points

The victory gives Xabi Alonso the perfect start to his Premier League career at Chelsea.

Interestingly, Alonso selected a remarkably young starting XI, with Chelsea's lineup having an average age of just 24 years and 43 days.

That placed Alonso fifth among managers who have fielded the youngest starting XI in their first Premier League match in charge.

There will still be defensive concerns for the new Chelsea boss, particularly after Fulham exposed weaknesses in Sanchez's goalkeeping and Chelsea's defensive organisation.

However, the quality and confidence shown by Chelsea's attacking players will provide Alonso with plenty of encouragement.
