Barcelona Begin La Liga Title Defence With 5-0 Win Over Elche
Barcelona made a flying start to their La Liga title defence, defeating Elche 5-0 in their opening match as new signing Antony Gordon made an immediate impact with two assists on his debut.
The 25-year-old English winger, who joined Barcelona from Newcastle United during the summer transfer window, came off the bench in the second half and needed just two minutes to register his first assist.
Raphinha Opens the Scoring
Barcelona took control early when Victor Chust fouled Raphinha inside the penalty area in the 14th minute.
The Brazilian winger stepped up and confidently sent goalkeeper Matias Dituro the wrong way to give the defending champions a 1-0 lead.
Elche created some pressure during the remainder of the first half, but Barcelona's defence managed to keep the visitors from finding an equaliser.
Adeyemi Scores on Barcelona Debut
Barcelona doubled their advantage before half-time through another summer signing, Karim Adeyemi.
The German winger, who joined from Borussia Dortmund, finished a move created by Raphinha to score his first goal in a Barcelona shirt.
The goal came shortly after Barcelona midfielder Gavi was forced off with an injury, with Pedri replacing him.
Gordon Makes Immediate Impact
The biggest highlight of the second half was the introduction of Antony Gordon.
Gordon replaced Lamine Yamal in the 65th minute and immediately added pace and creativity to Barcelona's attack.
Just two minutes after coming onto the pitch, Gordon provided his first assist by setting up Raphinha for Barcelona's third goal.
Four minutes later, the Englishman produced another excellent attacking move. Cutting forward from the left, Gordon created a clear opportunity for Fermín López, who calmly finished into an empty net to make it 4-0.
Gordon then completed a remarkable debut with two assists in just five minutes.
His quick impact was particularly notable considering he recorded only two assists in 26 Premier League appearances for Newcastle during the 2025/26 season, despite finishing the campaign as the club's leading scorer with 17 goals in all competitions.
López Completes the Rout
Barcelona continued to dominate after reaching 4-0, and López eventually found the net again in the 79th minute to complete the scoring.
The result gave Hansi Flick's side the perfect start to their title defence, matching the winning opening enjoyed by rivals Real Madrid, who defeated Espanyol on Saturday.
Barcelona's New Signings Make an Impression
Barcelona's opening match provided plenty of encouragement from their new arrivals.
Adeyemi scored on his debut, while Gordon immediately demonstrated his ability to create chances after coming off the bench.
The performances of the new signings could give Flick additional attacking options as Barcelona look to defend their La Liga crown and compete on multiple fronts this season.
What's Next for Barcelona?
Barcelona will now turn their attention to their next La Liga fixture against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday.
With a 5-0 victory already secured, Flick's team will head into the match full of confidence. Gordon's impressive debut also gives the Barcelona manager another exciting attacking option as the season begins.
