Kathmandu to Launch Nighttime Public Bus Service from Baisakh 1
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is preparing to introduce a nighttime public transportation system starting from Baisakh 1, 2083, aiming to make travel safer, more affordable, and accessible after dark.
This initiative, aligned with the Nepali New Year, is expected to revive urban life during the evening hours and strengthen Kathmandu’s growing night economy.
Electric Buses to Operate on Two Major Routes
The service will initially operate with four electric buses covering two key corridors across the valley.
1. North-South Route (16 KM)
The first route will run from Lagankhel to Budhanilkantha, passing through major healthcare centers such as:
- Patan Hospital
- Norvic Hospital
- Bir Hospital
- Kanti Children’s Hospital
- Teaching Hospital
- Gangalal Heart Center
This route is expected to be especially beneficial for patients, caregivers, and medical staff working night shifts.
2. East-West Route (20 KM)
The second route will connect Thankot to Tribhuvan International Airport, passing through:
- Kalanki
- Kalimati
- Tripureshwor
- Maitighar Mandala
- Baneshwor
- Tinkune
This corridor will serve daily commuters, travelers, and workers across major commercial areas.
Service Timing and Features
The buses will operate daily from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM, addressing the current gap in public transport after evening hours.
According to Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol, the service aims to reduce reliance on expensive taxis and improve safety for women, students, and late-night workers.
To ensure passenger security:
- CCTV cameras will be installed in all buses
- Municipal police will be deployed
- GPS tracking will allow real-time monitoring
Sajha Yatayat Leads Implementation
The service will be operated by Sajha Yatayat, which has committed to sustaining the project even during its initial phase.
CEO Bhupendra Aryal stated that the organization is prepared to bear operational losses for the first few months to ensure long-term success.
He highlighted that previous failures were due to lack of coordination and support, but this time, strong collaboration with local governments will ensure sustainability.
Why Previous Night Bus Services Failed
Earlier attempts at nighttime transportation in Kathmandu were unsuccessful due to:
- Low passenger turnout
- High operating costs
- Lack of subsidies and coordination
Projects like the “Night Heritage Tour” and earlier Sajha night buses could not sustain operations due to these challenges.
Economic and Social Impact
Transportation expert Sagar Onta emphasized that nighttime transport is essential for economic growth rather than a luxury.
He noted that areas like Thamel, Baneshwor, and the airport will see high demand, and initial government investment will be key to success.
The use of electric buses also supports environmental sustainability while reducing long-term costs.
The launch of nighttime public transportation marks a significant step toward transforming Kathmandu into a safer, more vibrant, and economically active city after dark. If successfully implemented, this initiative could reshape urban mobility and improve the quality of life for thousands of residents.
