Lawmaker Mahabir Pun Discloses Election Spending, Promises Remaining Funds for Public Service
Candidates who participated in the House of Representatives election held on Falgun 21 have started submitting their campaign expenditure details to the Election Commission of Nepal. As part of this process, newly elected lawmaker Mahabir Pun from Myagdi has publicly disclosed his election expenses through social media.
While many candidates have reported spending large sums on their election campaigns, Pun revealed that he not only spent money but also received significant financial support from well-wishers. He shared the complete details of his campaign finances through his Facebook page.
The Election Commission had set a maximum spending limit of 31 lakh rupees for candidates contesting from Myagdi district. According to Pun’s disclosure, his total campaign expenditure was 28 lakh 68 thousand 868 rupees, which is 231,132 rupees less than the permitted limit.
Pun explained that his campaign received strong support from local communities during his visits to villages and settlements. Residents and supporters contributed financial assistance, allowing him to raise 56 lakh 37 thousand 893 rupees from donors both inside Nepal and abroad.
He stated that the 45-day election campaign required considerable effort due to the geographical challenges of the district. According to Pun, traveling across the district to meet voters required visiting remote villages repeatedly.
“Myagdi is not like districts such as Jhapa or Kathmandu where the entire electoral area can be covered quickly,” Pun wrote on social media. “It took a full 45 days to reach every village, and we traveled across the district twice to meet voters.”
Pun said that during the campaign he worked daily from 7 AM to 10 PM along with a team of 10 to 16 members to reach people across the district. Despite the challenges, he emphasized that the campaign allowed him to connect directly with residents and understand their concerns.
After deducting campaign expenses, Pun revealed that 27 lakh 69 thousand 25 rupees and 47 paisa still remains in the **Rastriya Banijya Bank account opened for election purposes.
Remaining Funds to Be Used for Public Service
Pun has pledged that the remaining funds will be used for public service initiatives in the district. According to him, the money will help establish a liaison office in Beni Bazaar, the district headquarters of Myagdi.
The office will aim to assist residents from rural villages who travel to the district headquarters to complete government-related work. Pun said the office will provide basic support services such as documentation assistance and guidance for public services.
He plans to operate the liaison office with two employees, along with equipment such as a computer, printer, and photocopy machine to maintain records and assist citizens.
Pun stated that the office will operate for the next five years to support people visiting government offices in the district.
“Even if I cannot provide large-scale assistance, I will certainly provide small support to those who need help,” Pun wrote while explaining the purpose of the initiative.
Pun’s public disclosure of campaign finances has drawn attention as an example of transparency in electoral spending, with the lawmaker emphasizing that remaining funds will be directed toward community service rather than personal use.
