Kyiv Hit by Russian Missile and Drone Attack as Casualties Reported

Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, came under a heavy Russian missile and drone attack on Saturday morning, leaving at least three people dead and dozens more injured, according to Ukrainian officials.

The latest assault caused damage to residential buildings and other infrastructure across several districts of the capital, while emergency teams continued search and rescue operations at affected locations.

Residential Buildings Damaged in Kyiv

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a five-story residential building in the Solomianskyi district was damaged after missile debris fell onto the area. Some residents were reportedly feared trapped inside the building, while a fire broke out in a nearby courtyard.

Another residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district also sustained significant damage. The first and second floors were partially destroyed, with reports that people may have been trapped inside.

Emergency services were deployed to the affected areas as rescue and recovery efforts continued.

In the Darnytskyi district, warehouses were also reported to have caught fire following the attack. Damage was reported in several other parts of Kyiv as authorities assessed the full impact of the overnight strikes.

Latest Attack Follows Deadly Strikes Across Ukraine

The attack on Kyiv came just two days after another large-scale Russian missile and drone assault targeted multiple parts of Ukraine.

That earlier attack reportedly killed 10 civilians and injured more than 50 people.

During the previous wave of strikes, a Russian missile was also reported to have entered Polish airspace, raising further concerns about the possibility of the conflict affecting neighbouring NATO countries.

The latest escalation has once again highlighted the continuing threat posed by Russia's long-range missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities.

Zelenskyy Calls for More Patriot Air Defense Systems

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed his appeal to the United States and other Western allies to provide additional Patriot air defense systems to help protect Ukraine from Russian missile attacks.

In a conversation with US Vice President JD Vance on Friday, Zelenskyy reportedly discussed Ukraine's ongoing need for stronger air defense capabilities.

Zelenskyy also described his recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington as positive and productive.

"Russian air attacks are ongoing," Zelenskyy said in a message shared on Telegram, stressing that securing additional interceptors for Patriot systems was a major priority, particularly for defending against ballistic missiles.

Uncertainty Over Additional Patriot Systems

At a NATO summit held in Ankara in July, Trump had indicated that additional Patriot air defense systems could be made available to Ukraine.

However, during a cabinet meeting at Camp David on Friday, the US president reportedly said that a final decision on the matter had not yet been made.

Ukraine has repeatedly called for additional air defense equipment as Russian missile and drone attacks continue to target cities and critical infrastructure.

Growing Pressure on Ukraine's Air Defenses

The latest attack comes as Ukraine continues to face sustained aerial attacks and seeks additional support from its international partners.

Patriot systems are considered particularly important for defending against certain types of ballistic missile threats. Ukrainian officials have therefore made strengthening air defense one of their most urgent requests to Western allies.

As rescue operations continue in Kyiv and authorities assess the damage, the latest strikes have once again underscored the ongoing dangers faced by civilians across Ukraine.

The international community continues to closely monitor the situation as Ukraine presses its allies for additional air defense support and stronger measures to protect its population from further attacks.
