Russia Launches Missile and Drone Attacks on Ukraine, Killing 21 Civilians
Russia launched a major wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, from Tuesday night into Wednesday, according to Ukrainian officials.
At least 21 civilians, including four children, were killed, while around 60 others were injured in the attacks.
The strikes targeted dozens of locations across Ukraine and once again highlighted the continuing threat posed by Russia's long-range missiles and drones more than four years after the full-scale invasion began.
Ukraine Warned of Large-Scale Russian Attack
Ukrainian authorities had anticipated the possibility of a major Russian assault from the air.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that Ukrainian intelligence had determined that Russia was preparing for a large-scale attack.
Despite the warning, Ukrainian air defenses were unable to prevent all of the incoming missiles and drones from reaching their targets.
The latest strikes have raised renewed concerns over Ukraine's ability to defend its cities against increasingly advanced Russian weapons.
Ballistic Missiles Create Air Defense Challenge
One of the biggest challenges for Ukraine is defending against Russian ballistic missiles.
Ukraine relies heavily on Western-supplied air defense systems, including the US-made Patriot system, to intercept some of the most difficult incoming threats.
However, a shortage of the interceptors required by these systems has made it increasingly difficult for Ukraine to protect every targeted area.
At the same time, Russia has continued to develop and deploy newer types of weapons, increasing the pressure on Ukraine's air defense network.
Ukraine Develops New Interceptors
Ukraine is also attempting to strengthen its own defense capabilities.
Officials and defense developers have been working on new-generation interceptors designed to counter Russian jet-powered drones and other high-speed aerial threats.
The development of these systems has become increasingly important as Russia continues to use long-range drones and missiles in attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
Air War Intensifies Despite Battlefield Stalemate
The latest attacks come as the broader war between Russia and Ukraine continues without a decisive breakthrough on the battlefield.
After more than four years of full-scale conflict, fighting along the front lines remains intense, while both sides have increasingly relied on long-range strikes.
Russia has continued launching missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian territory, while Ukraine has also carried out attacks against targets inside Russia.
The continued aerial warfare has caused extensive damage and placed civilians under persistent threat.
For Ukraine, the consequences are particularly severe because of its smaller population and limited resources compared with Russia.
Ceasefire Efforts Remain Uncertain
Diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a path toward a ceasefire have so far failed to produce a clear breakthrough.
The United States has been involved in efforts to encourage negotiations, while discussions have continued over the possibility of advancing technical talks between Russia and Ukraine.
However, no concrete agreement has emerged that would immediately end the fighting.
The latest escalation has further complicated hopes for a near-term ceasefire.
Western Analysts See Continued Russian Pressure
Western analysts have argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin is pursuing a strategy aimed at maintaining military pressure on Ukraine.
According to this assessment, Moscow may be betting that continued military and economic pressure will eventually weaken Ukraine's ability to resist and test the willingness of its Western allies to maintain long-term support.
The continuation of large-scale missile and drone attacks is consistent with that broader strategy of sustained pressure.
European Union Condemns the Attacks
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen strongly criticized the latest Russian attacks.
Writing on the social media platform X, von der Leyen described Russia's actions as a "deliberate strategy of terror."
She argued that the attacks were aimed at making ordinary life increasingly difficult for Ukrainians who want to live peacefully.
The latest strikes have once again placed civilians at the centre of international concern as the war continues with no immediate end in sight.
Ukraine Faces Another Difficult Phase
The latest wave of Russian attacks demonstrates the continuing importance of air defense for Ukraine.
While Kyiv and its allies continue working to strengthen missile defenses and develop new technologies, Russia's growing use of drones and ballistic missiles is creating new challenges.
With diplomatic efforts still uncertain and fighting continuing on the battlefield, Ukraine faces another difficult phase in the war.
For civilians across the country, however, the immediate concern remains much simpler: staying safe as attacks continue to threaten homes, cities and everyday life.
