National Paddy Day Celebrated Across Nepal with Dahi Chiura Tradition

Nepal is observing National Paddy Day and Dahi Chiura Day today with great enthusiasm as farmers across the country begin paddy plantation activities while people celebrate the occasion by enjoying the traditional meal of dahi chiura.

Observed annually on Asar 15, the day holds immense cultural and agricultural significance in Nepal. Farmers spend the day transplanting rice seedlings in muddy fields while singing traditional Asare songs, turning agricultural work into a festive celebration.

Dahi chiura has long been associated with Asar 15, as it is believed to provide energy, cool the body, and help people endure the physically demanding work during the monsoon season. Over the years, the tradition has expanded beyond farming communities, with people from all walks of life participating in the celebration.

Yogurt also holds an important place in Nepali culture and religious traditions. It is used during auspicious ceremonies, travel, and special occasions as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity. Traditional beliefs suggest that consuming dahi before important events brings success and positive outcomes.

Ayurvedic practices also emphasize the health benefits of yogurt and buttermilk, considering them beneficial for digestion and overall health. Dahi chiura is widely regarded as a nutritious meal, especially during the summer and monsoon seasons.

National Paddy Day has been officially celebrated since 2062 BS following a government decision made in 2061 BS. The occasion recognizes the contribution of farmers and highlights the importance of agriculture to Nepal's economy and food security.

The day is also marked by cultural activities, folk songs, and traditional mud games in paddy fields. Many young people participate in these activities, preserving Nepal's rich agricultural heritage.

However, this year, delayed rainfall in several parts of the country has affected paddy transplantation activities. Farmers in some areas have also raised concerns regarding fertilizer shortages. Despite these challenges, the government has assured that adequate fertilizer supplies are available.

National Paddy Day continues to symbolize Nepal's deep connection with agriculture, culture, and rural traditions while honoring the hard work and dedication of farmers across the country.
