I recently completed a Birgunj to Kathmandu bike trip, and it turned out to be more than just a road trip. This Birgunj to Kathmandu motorbike tour was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure through beautiful sceneries, peaceful villages, rolling hills, calm rivers, and quiet highways of Nepal.
In this Nepal bike trip blog, I’ll share my complete motorbike journey experience in Nepal from deciding on the trip to planning, the exact Birgunj to Kathmandu bike route I took, what I ate, whom I met, and everything I saw and felt. If you’re planning a solo bike trip from Birgunj to Kathmandu, this blog will be a helpful guide.
Hi, I’m Aryan Miya Mansoor, an SEO SPECIALIST FROM NEPAL passionate about storytelling through real experiences. In this blog, I share my journey from Birgunj to Kathmandu, covering travel insights, local experiences, and practical tips along the way, written with both readers and search engines in mind.
Riding is my passion and I just love it. I often take short rides when I feel stressed or want to feel free. But this time, I wanted to go on a long-distance bike trip in Nepal.
I had personal work in Kathmandu and also wanted to meet some relatives and friends in Baneshwor. Instead of traveling by bus or flight, I thought:
“Why not take a bike ride and enjoy the journey?”
I didn’t just want to reach the destination during this Birgunj to Kathmandu bike trip; I wanted to enjoy:
Every road
Every turn
Every moment of the journey
Proper preparation is very important for any motorbike journey in Nepal. Even a small mistake can cause big problems on the road.
Bike service: Brakes, tires, engine oil, horn, lights
Safety gear: Helmet, riding jacket, gloves, shoes
Raincoat (because hill weather can change anytime)
Dry fruits, biscuits, and a water bottle
Power bank, mobile charger, and some extra cash
Bike documents, citizenship copy, and driving license
Always wear a helmet, even for short rides
Start early: between 5:00 AM – 6:00 AM
Take rest every 2–3 hours
Don’t speed on hilly roads
Talk politely to locals – they’ll help if you need directions
Total Distance: Around 280 km
Time Taken: Around 10 hours with breaks
Birgunj → Pathlaiya → Hetauda → Narayanghat → Mugling → Naubise → Thankot → Kathmandu
Terai Region: Flat and straight roads
Hill Region: Curvy, uphill and downhill roads
River Valleys: Riding alongside Trishuli and Narayani Rivers
Tribhuvan Highway: Birgunj to Hetauda
East-West Highway: Hetauda to Narayanghat
Prithvi Highway: Mugling to Kathmandu
This is considered one of the best bike routes from Birgunj to Kathmandu.
I began my Birgunj to Kathmandu bike trip at 6:00 AM from Birgunj. The weather was fresh, and there was no traffic. I passed:
Chhapkaiya (My Home)
Pathlaiya
Simara
After about 2 hours of riding, I reached Hetauda, a green and peaceful city. I stopped at a roadside tea shop and had:
Sel roti
Milk tea
It was warm, delicious, and gave me great energy for the next ride of my Nepal motorbike tour.
After a short rest, I continued toward Narayanghat on this Nepal road trip by bike. The roads were smooth and passed through:
Open fields
Small villages
Rice paddies and green landscapes
Farmers working in fields
Buffaloes and cows grazing
Birds flying in the sky
Golden morning sunlight on the road
I reached Narayanghat around noon and took a break for:
Dal Bhat lunch – hot, fresh, and satisfying
I even lay down beside the Narayani River, enjoying one of the most peaceful moments of my solo bike trip in Nepal.
After lunch, the most adventurous part of the Birgunj to Kathmandu motorbike tour started. The road from Narayanghat to Mugling and Naubise is hilly, narrow, and full of curves.
On one side, there was a mountain. On the other, the Trishuli River flowed strongly and loudly.
Sound of the river
Birds chirping in the forests
Lush green hills and forests
I stopped at the famous Mugling Bridge, had tea, took some photos, and continued riding through forests, twisting hill roads, and small wooden bridges. This was the most beautiful part of my adventure bike trip in Nepal.
From Naubise, I climbed uphill to Thankot. The wind became cooler, and I saw:
Green hills
Small waterfalls
Peaceful hill villages
Crossing Thankot, I finally entered the Kathmandu Valley and completed my Birgunj to Kathmandu bike trip successfully.
When I reached Kathmandu, it felt silent inside me due to the crowds and busy roads. Kathmandu looked very different from Birgunj:
Cooler weather
Greener surroundings
Busy traffic and crowds
Temples and shrines
Even with heavy traffic, I was excited to explore the city after my long-distance bike ride in Nepal.
After resting, I explored famous places:
Thamel
Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)
Pashupatinath Temple
Kathmandu Durbar Square
Momos
Chatamari
Bara (Newari snack)
Narayani River
Trishuli River
Mugling Bridge
Forests near Hetauda and Naubise
Hill roads after Mugling
This Birgunj to Kathmandu bike trip taught me life lessons:
Be slow and patient
Nature heals
Solo travel helps personal growth
Hetauda – Sel roti & milk tea
Narayanghat – Dal Bhat
Mugling – Momos & pakoras
Best Season: October to May
Avoid rainy season
Carry documents
Rest every 2–3 hours
This Birgunj to Kathmandu bike trip was a life-changing experience. Riding solo helped me connect with nature and myself.
“The road teaches us more than the destination.”
If you love motorbikes and adventure, this Nepal bike trip from Birgunj to Kathmandu is a must. It’s scenic, adventurous, and unforgettable.
Birgunj → Pathlaiya → Hetauda → Narayanghat → Mugling → Naubise → Thankot → Kathmandu
In conclusion, my journey from Birgunj to Kathmandu was more than just a trip, it was an experience shaped by people, places, and moments along the way. As an SEO content writer, Aryan Miya Mansoor, I believe every journey has a story worth telling, and this one added another meaningful chapter to mine.`
