Former PM KP Sharma Oli Arrested in Bhaktapur Following Cabinet Decision

Former PM KP Sharma Oli has been arrested in Bhaktapur following a cabinet decision to act on the Madhes protest investigation report.

Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has been taken into custody by police in Bhaktapur. He was arrested from Gundu on Saturday after authorities issued an official arrest warrant.

The arrest comes just a day after the newly formed government decided to act on the findings of an investigation commission led by former justice Gauribahadur Karki. During a cabinet meeting held on Friday, the government approved the implementation of the commission’s report.

The commission, which was established to investigate the Madhes protests, had recommended legal action against Oli. According to the report submitted on Chaitra 24, Oli and then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak were held accountable for incidents that occurred during the protests.

Specifically, the report links them to the firing on youths in Baneshwor, Kathmandu, during the demonstrations on Bhadra 23 and 24. Based on these findings, the government moved forward with criminal proceedings.

The Madhes protests were one of the deadliest in recent history, with 76 people losing their lives during the unrest. Authorities are expected to continue further investigation and legal processes in the coming days.
