Nepal Universities Postpone Exams Amid Severe Natural Disasters

The Nepal government has directed universities across the country to postpone examinations and other educational activities in response to the severe impact of recent natural disasters on public life.

Minister for Education and Sports Sashmit Pokharel has instructed university vice-chancellors to postpone examinations scheduled from Bhadra 13 under the authority provided by the existing University Act.

Exams to Be Rescheduled

Universities have been asked to prepare and publish revised examination schedules at an appropriate time.

The ministry has also directed universities to arrange re-examinations for students who were unable to attend examinations held on Bhadra 12 because of natural disasters and related circumstances.

The decision aims to ensure that students affected by the disaster are not academically disadvantaged because of circumstances beyond their control.

Educational Programs Also Suspended

Along with examinations, universities have been asked to avoid organizing large-scale activities such as:

• Seminars
• Conferences
• Symposia
• Large gatherings
• Other collective academic programs

Universities have been urged to prioritize the safety and well-being of students, guardians and academic staff while the country continues to deal with the disaster situation.

Focus on Students Affected by Disasters

The education ministry has called on universities and educational institutions to maintain regular communication and coordination with students affected by the disaster.

Institutions have also been encouraged to provide necessary assistance and facilitation to students facing difficulties due to displacement, transportation disruptions or other consequences of the natural disasters.

Psychosocial Support for Students

Recognizing that disasters can create significant mental and emotional stress, the ministry has also instructed universities to make arrangements for psychosocial counseling for affected students and their guardians.

The government has emphasized that educational institutions should take appropriate measures to reduce the disruption caused by the disaster while ensuring that students can eventually continue their studies normally.

Universities Asked to Implement Decision Immediately

The ministry has instructed universities to implement the decisions immediately, taking the current sensitive situation seriously.

The postponement is intended to provide students and families with greater safety and relief while authorities continue rescue, relief and disaster-response operations across affected areas.

The revised examination schedules will be announced by the respective universities when conditions become suitable.
