Italy Edge Closer to World Cup Return with Win Over Northern Ireland
Italy moved one step closer to qualifying for the FIFA World Cup after securing a 2-0 victory against Northern Ireland in the playoff semifinal in Bergamo. The four-time world champions are now on the brink of ending their long absence from the tournament, having last appeared in 2014.
The match proved to be more challenging than expected for Italy, especially in the first half, as Northern Ireland put up a disciplined and energetic performance. The visitors managed to limit clear chances and kept the Italian side under pressure early on.
The breakthrough finally came in the 56th minute when midfielder Sandro Tonali struck a powerful shot from outside the penalty area, giving Italy the lead and lifting the home crowd.
Northern Ireland responded by increasing their attacking efforts in search of an equalizer. However, their inability to convert chances proved costly. Italy sealed the result in the 80th minute when Moise Kean found the net with a well-placed effort that went in off the post.
Despite the loss, Northern Ireland showed promise with one of their youngest squads in decades under coach Michael O’Neill. The team, aiming for its first World Cup appearance in 40 years, created early problems for Italy but struggled with finishing. Missing key players such as Conor Bradley, Dan Ballard, and Ali McCann also affected their overall performance.
Italy, now coached by Gennaro Gattuso, will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoff final. Bosnia advanced after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Wales in the other semifinal.
The winner of the final, scheduled for Tuesday, will secure a place in World Cup Group B, alongside hosts Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland will exit the qualification race and prepare for a friendly match against Wales in Cardiff.
