Manchester City Defeat Newcastle 3-1 Despite Haaland’s Absence to Reach FA Cup Quarterfinals

Manchester City secured a 3-1 comeback victory over Newcastle United in the FA Cup fifth round, proving they can thrive even without Erling Haaland. Omar Marmoush netted twice while Savinho scored the equalizer to send Pep Guardiola’s side into the quarterfinals for the eighth straight year.

Manchester City demonstrated their squad depth by defeating Newcastle United 3-1 in the FA Cup fifth round, even without their star striker Erling Haaland. Pep Guardiola rested several key players, but the rotated lineup still produced an impressive comeback win to reach the quarterfinals for the eighth consecutive season.

The match at St James’ Park began with Newcastle playing aggressively, and the hosts managed to take an early lead. City initially struggled to deal with the intensity of Eddie Howe’s side during the opening 30 minutes.

However, the momentum shifted just before halftime when Brazilian winger Savinho scored the equalizer for City. His goal changed the course of the match and gave Guardiola’s team renewed confidence heading into the second half.

Omar Marmoush, who started in place of Haaland, proved to be the difference-maker. The Egyptian forward scored twice in the second half to seal the victory for the defending champions. His first goal came from a simple finish, while the second was a powerful strike from outside the box.

Interestingly, Marmoush has developed an impressive record against Newcastle. Half of his 14 goals for Manchester City have come against Eddie Howe’s team, highlighting his effectiveness whenever he faces them.

Pep Guardiola made ten changes to the lineup compared to the team that drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest earlier in the week. Only right-back Matheus Nunes retained his place in the starting XI. Despite the heavy rotation, City managed to control the match after their slow start.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola praised his team’s performance, especially their improvement after the first 20 minutes.

He admitted that the early stages were difficult but was delighted with the overall display from both attacking and defensive perspectives. The manager also expressed satisfaction at reaching the FA Cup quarterfinals once again.

The victory means Manchester City have now won 19 of their last 21 FA Cup matches. Their only defeats during that run came in the 2024 and 2025 finals.

Guardiola’s passionate reaction during the match showed how seriously he takes the competition. The City manager was seen protesting decisions on the touchline and celebrated wildly when Marmoush scored the third goal.

With several players recently returning from injury, including Nico González, Jérémy Doku, John Stones, and Nathan Aké, City now have a stronger squad available as the season approaches its crucial stages.

Key players such as Haaland, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and Rúben Dias were rested for the cup match and are expected to return for the upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Guardiola has often said that his goal is for Manchester City to remain competitive in all competitions as the season enters March. With the squad now fit and performing well, City appear to be on track to challenge on multiple fronts once again.
