Budhigandaki River Flash Flood Leaves Trail of Destruction

A dry landslide that blocked the Syar River in Chumunubri Rural Municipality triggered a destructive flood in the Budhigandaki River, devastating riverside settlements, sweeping away homes and a school, and forcing residents to flee to higher ground.

A dry landslide that occurred between Kharong and Ungjulung in Ward No. 6 of Chumunubri Rural Municipality temporarily blocked the Syar River, resulting in a powerful flood in the Budhigandaki River. The sudden surge of water caused widespread destruction in several riverside communities, leaving residents displaced and damaging public infrastructure.

The flood heavily impacted the settlements of Ghattekhola, Payun, Sallery, and Jagat Bagger in Ward No. 3. Among the worst-hit areas was Jagat Bagger, which was reportedly swept away by the force of the flood. The disaster also destroyed the building of Bikas Primary School in Ghattekhola, adding to the losses faced by local communities.

Vice-Chairperson Laxmi Gurung of Chumunubri Rural Municipality said the flood entered residential areas with tremendous force. She described the Budhigandaki River as surging with an intensity similar to the Bhote Koshi River, leaving Jagat Bagger completely devastated while causing extensive destruction in Sallery, Payun, and Ghattekhola.

The rapid rise in water levels forced residents to abandon their homes and seek refuge on nearby hills and in forested areas. Many people escaped with only their lives, unable to collect essential belongings, food supplies, or other valuables before fleeing. Local authorities confirmed that displaced families are currently staying in safer locations.

Officials also reported that the Budhigandaki River continues to flow at a dangerous level and has begun eroding land toward the Sirdibas area. While authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of homes destroyed, initial assessments indicate that numerous structures along the riverbanks have suffered severe damage.

Rescue teams and local officials are continuing to assess the extent of the destruction while gathering detailed information on damaged properties and the condition of affected communities. Further updates are expected as rescue operations and damage assessments continue.
