Chennai Super Kings Add Spencer Johnson as Replacement for Injured Nathan Ellis in IPL 2026
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have brought in Australian pacer Spencer Johnson as a replacement for Nathan Ellis, who has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 due to injury. Ellis suffered a hamstring issue that worsened during the final of a domestic one-day tournament, forcing him to withdraw from the competition.
To fill the gap, CSK signed Johnson for INR 15 million. However, the left-arm fast bowler is currently recovering from a back problem and is expected to join the squad only between April 21 and 23.
Because of his delayed arrival, Johnson will likely miss at least the opening four matches of the season. The 30-year-old has had a history of back-related injuries, including a previous stint with Kolkata Knight Riders where he spent a significant period sidelined. According to his coach Ryan Harris, Johnson has begun bowling again and is steadily regaining fitness.
Johnson gained major attention in 2024 when he secured a high-value contract with Gujarat Titans for INR 10 crore. He later featured in the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders. Although he went unsold in the most recent auction, this opportunity with CSK has come after Ellis’s injury created a vacancy in the squad.
With Johnson’s inclusion, CSK’s pace attack now features overseas options like Matt Henry, Jamie Overton, and Jack Fewkes. The team’s Indian fast bowling lineup includes Khaleel Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj, and Mukesh Choudhary, who will play key roles throughout the tournament.
