PBKS Edge Past GT in Thriller as Connolly’s Dream Debut Seals 3-Wicket Win

Punjab Kings secured a dramatic three-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in a tense IPL 2026 clash. Debutant Cooper Connolly starred with a match-winning unbeaten 72 under pressure. The game saw multiple momentum shifts before PBKS held their nerve.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) clinched a thrilling three-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 4 of the TATA IPL 2026, overcoming a tense situation in the final stages of the chase. Playing at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, PBKS successfully chased down a target of 163, thanks to a remarkable debut performance by Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly.

After winning the toss, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer opted to bowl first, and his decision proved effective early on. The bowling unit delivered a disciplined performance to restrict Gujarat Titans to 162/6. GT began positively with Shubman Gill leading the charge, playing fluent strokes to keep the scoreboard moving. However, Punjab struck early when Marco Jansen dismissed Sai Sudharsan, breaking the opening rhythm. Gill continued to anchor the innings and top-scored with 39, but lacked sustained support from the other end.

The middle overs saw Punjab Kings take control of the match. Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal played a key role by maintaining tight lines and picking up crucial wickets, including that of Gill. Jos Buttler attempted to stabilize the innings with a steady knock, but his dismissal, highlighted by an impressive catch from Xavier Bartlett, shifted momentum further in PBKS’ favor. Vijaykumar Vyshak then delivered a decisive spell, removing key middle-order batters and finishing with three wickets, ensuring GT could only post a moderate total.

In response, PBKS began their chase cautiously but soon picked up pace through Prabhsimran Singh and debutant Cooper Connolly. The duo built a strong partnership, putting the hosts in a comfortable position. However, Gujarat Titans fought back strongly as Prasidh Krishna produced a game-changing spell. His quick breakthroughs triggered a sudden collapse, reducing PBKS from a dominant position to a precarious situation within a short span.

With the match slipping away and experienced batters back in the pavilion, the responsibility fell on Connolly. Showing exceptional maturity, the young Australian remained calm under pressure and guided the innings with confidence. He played a controlled yet aggressive knock, finding boundaries at crucial moments and keeping the required run rate in check.

Connolly’s unbeaten 72 proved to be the difference, as he expertly navigated the final overs alongside Xavier Bartlett, who contributed with a valuable late cameo. The pair ensured there were no further setbacks and brought the team close to victory. Connolly eventually sealed the match in style, hitting the winning boundary to complete a memorable debut performance.

The match was marked by several momentum swings, with both teams having opportunities to take control. While Gujarat Titans showed resilience with the ball, their inability to defend a modest total proved costly. Punjab Kings, on the other hand, displayed composure in the crucial moments to emerge victorious.

With this win, PBKS will take confidence into the rest of their campaign, while Gujarat Titans will look to regroup after a competitive but ultimately disappointing outing.
