Atletico Madrid Defeat 10-Man Manchester United 2-0 for First Champions League Victory
Atletico Madrid collected their first UEFA Champions League win of the season after defeating Manchester United 2-0 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Pablo Barrios opened the scoring within the opening minute before substitute Ademola Lookman wrapped up the result late in the second half, as the visitors struggled after being reduced to ten men.
The home side made the perfect start, needing less than a minute to break the deadlock. Alex Baena delivered a precise pass into the penalty area for Barrios, whose low strike took a slight deflection before beating goalkeeper Senne Lammens to hand Atletico an early advantage.
Manchester United attempted to recover from the early setback and created a couple of promising opportunities through Bryan Mbeumo. His first effort was blocked by the Atletico defence, while Jan Oblak produced a strong save from a narrow angle to keep the visitors ahead.
Atletico remained dangerous throughout the opening half. Alejandro Grimaldo came close with a curling free-kick that struck the woodwork, while Johnny Cardoso believed he had doubled the lead moments before halftime. However, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out because Marcos Llorente handled the ball during the attacking move.
The hosts continued to threaten after the break. Julian Alvarez rattled the post with a well-struck volley, while Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes went close at the opposite end, first shooting wide before clipping the top of the crossbar with a looping effort.
United's hopes suffered a major blow in the 74th minute when defender Leny Yoro was shown a red card following a VAR review. Initially, the referee penalized Jonathan David for handball, but replays showed Yoro had denied the Canadian striker a clear goalscoring opportunity before the incident, leaving Manchester United with ten players.
Atletico quickly capitalized on their numerical advantage. Grimaldo led another dangerous attack before finding Jonathan David, whose shot was saved by Lammens. The rebound fell kindly to substitute Ademola Lookman, who reacted first to tap home Atletico's second goal and effectively end the contest.
Manchester United nearly grabbed a consolation goal in the closing stages after Joshua Zirkzee set up Matheus Cunha following a defensive mistake, but Oblak produced another excellent save to preserve his clean sheet.
The result continued Atletico Madrid's impressive record against Manchester United, extending their unbeaten run against the English club. It also marked an important response following their opening Champions League setback, giving Diego Simeone's side valuable momentum in the group stage.
From a statistical perspective, Atletico edged the contest by producing 11 shots with an expected goals (xG) value of 1.42, while Manchester United managed nine attempts worth 0.98 xG. Despite creating a handful of chances, the visitors lacked the cutting edge needed to break down Atletico's disciplined defence.
The victory gives Atletico Madrid a valuable three points and their first clean sheet of the current European campaign, while Manchester United are left searching for answers after another disappointing Champions League defeat.
