Eberechi Eze’s Stunning FA Cup Goal Secures Arsenal’s Quarterfinal Spot
In a nail-biting FA Cup fifth-round clash, Eberechi Eze emerged as Arsenal’s hero, scoring a spectacular goal that sealed a 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town, keeping the Gunners’ quadruple ambitions alive.
The Premier League leaders traveled to face 16th-placed League One side Mansfield in a historic meeting – the first in 97 years – and the Stags were appearing in the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1975.
Arsenal took an early lead just before halftime through Noni Madueke, who expertly converted a rebound from Gabriel Martinelli to fire into the top corner. Mansfield, however, showed incredible resilience. Five minutes into the second half, Will Evans, introduced at halftime, capitalized on shaky Arsenal defending to level the score, sending the home crowd into frenzy.
The London side looked vulnerable in an unusual back three formation, with teenagers Max Dowman and Marli Salmon causing early scares. Mansfield tested goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with several threatening efforts, including long-range strikes from Tyler Roberts and Rhys Oates, as well as a low drive from Louis Reed.
Mikel Arteta’s tactical changes in the 62nd minute proved decisive. Eze, introduced as part of a double substitution, found space at the edge of the box and unleashed a thunderous strike into the top-right corner, sending Mansfield’s hopes crashing. Later, Bukayo Saka made an impact off the bench, but Liam Roberts denied him with a superb save.
Despite their valiant efforts, Mansfield couldn’t find a second equalizer, ending their memorable FA Cup journey. Arsenal now progress to the quarterfinals for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2020, Arteta’s only silverware to date.
This victory demonstrates Arsenal’s depth and resilience, as well as Eberechi Eze’s ability to shine in big moments, making him one of the standout players in this season’s FA Cup.
