Canada 1-1 Bosnia-Herzegovina: Larin Salvages Historic First World Cup Point for Co-Hosts

Canada earned their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after substitute Cyle Larin scored a crucial second-half equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto. Jovo Lukic had given the visitors the lead before the hosts fought back in an entertaining Group B opener.

Canada secured the first World Cup point in their history after substitute Cyle Larin inspired a second-half comeback in a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group B opener at Toronto Stadium.

The co-hosts found themselves trailing after Jovo Lukic's first-half strike stunned the home crowd, but Canada responded strongly after the break, with Larin making an immediate impact from the bench to rescue a valuable point.

Bosnia-Herzegovina Strike First

Canada started brightly and controlled possession in the opening stages, but Bosnia-Herzegovina created the more dangerous opportunities early on. Amar Memic wasted a promising chance before Jonathan David tested goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj with Canada's best opening of the first half.

Bosnia-Herzegovina capitalised on a set-piece in the 21st minute. Sead Kolasinac flicked on a corner at the near post, allowing Lukic to finish from close range and score his first international goal.

Despite Canada's attacking intent, the visitors held their lead going into halftime.

Canada Respond After the Break

The hosts came out with renewed energy in the second half. Richie Laryea came agonisingly close to equalising when his low effort slipped through Vasilj's legs, only for Kolasinac to clear the ball off the line and onto the crossbar.

At the other end, Ermedin Demirovic nearly doubled Bosnia-Herzegovina's advantage, but goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau reacted quickly to deny the striker.

Canada continued to press and eventually found their breakthrough through substitute Larin. Just 121 seconds after entering the match, the veteran forward turned brilliantly inside the penalty area before firing past Vasilj to level the score.

Larin almost completed the comeback in dramatic fashion late on, but Tarik Muharemovic produced a crucial block to deny the hosts a winning goal.

Historic Point for Canada

Although Canada remain without a World Cup victory after seven matches, the draw represents a significant milestone. Prior to this match, the Canadians had lost all six of their previous World Cup games.

Head coach Jesse Marsch will be encouraged by his team's attacking display, particularly considering the absence of injured captain Alphonso Davies. Larin's goal also made him only the second Canadian player to score at a FIFA World Cup after Davies.

Match Statistics

  • Possession favored Canada for large periods of the match.
  • Canada recorded 13 shots and generated 1.25 expected goals (xG).

  • Jovo Lukic scored his first international goal.
  • Cyle Larin scored just 121 seconds after coming off the bench.

The result gives Canada a valuable point in Group B and keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive. Bosnia-Herzegovina will also be satisfied with a disciplined performance against one of the tournament hosts.

With tougher challenges ahead, Canada will look to build on their improved finishing and attacking momentum as they continue their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign.
