USA Opens FIFA World Cup 2026 with Convincing 4-1 Victory Against Paraguay

The United States started their 2026 World Cup campaign in style with a commanding 4-1 win over Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium. Folarin Balogun starred with a brace, while an early own goal from Damian Bobadilla and a late strike from Giovanni Reyna completed the victory. Paraguay managed a second-half consolation, but USA dominated throughout the match.

The United States enjoyed an ideal start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, securing an impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium on Friday.

Forward Folarin Balogun played a decisive role, scoring twice as the co-hosts collected all three points in their opening Group D encounter.

The Americans took an early advantage in the seventh minute when Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla inadvertently turned Weston McKennie’s low cross into his own net. The move was sparked by a brilliant run from Christian Pulisic, who weaved past two defenders before setting the attack in motion.Balogun thought he had doubled the lead before the half-hour mark, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review detected an offside infringement against Pulisic earlier in the build-up.

The striker quickly made amends in the 31st minute. After Antonee Robinson released Pulisic down the left flank, the AC Milan star's deflected pass found Balogun, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

The United States continued to dominate the first half. Chris Richards came close with a header that drifted just wide, while Malik Tillman forced a save from goalkeeper Orlando Gill from close range.

Just before the break, Balogun grabbed his second goal of the evening. Tillman delivered a perfectly weighted through ball, allowing the forward to hold off Omar Alderete and fire an excellent finish into the top corner, giving the hosts a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.

Paraguay showed more resistance after the interval and reduced the deficit in the 73rd minute. Substitute Mauricio finished first time from Julio Enciso’s clever pass to beat goalkeeper Matt Freese.

However, any hopes of a comeback were ended deep into stoppage time when Giovanni Reyna produced a stunning trivela strike to seal a convincing 4-1 victory.

Despite generating an expected goals (xG) figure of just 1.35, the United States were clinical in front of goal and limited Paraguay to only 0.51 xG throughout the match.

Experience Gives USA the Edge

Paraguay entered the match with one of their youngest World Cup starting lineups in decades, averaging just over 28 years of age. It was their youngest opening World Cup XI since the 1998 tournament.

By contrast, the United States relied on valuable experience, with veteran defender Tim Ream becoming the oldest player ever to represent the nation at a World Cup, aged 38 years and 250 days. The hosts also achieved a unique milestone by fielding players from each of Europe's five major leagues in a World Cup starting lineup for the first time.

Their opening goal arrived after only 6 minutes and 48 seconds, making it the third-fastest goal scored by a host nation in its opening World Cup match, behind France in 1938 and Germany in 2006.

The Americans reached another landmark by taking a three-goal lead into halftime for the first time in World Cup history.

Pulisic was influential before being substituted at the break, completing three successful dribbles and creating two chances. Meanwhile, Balogun became only the second United States player to score multiple goals in a World Cup match, joining Bert Patenaude, who achieved the feat against Paraguay in 1930.
