US and Iran Begin Peace Talks in Islamabad Amid Rising Global Tensions

US and Iran have begun crucial peace talks in Islamabad under Pakistan’s mediation. The discussions aim to reduce tensions and explore a possible ceasefire amid ongoing conflict.

Peace talks between United States and Iran have officially commenced in Islamabad, marking a significant diplomatic effort to ease escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The discussions began at 4:00 PM on Saturday at the prestigious Serena Hotel Islamabad, with Pakistan playing a key role as mediator. According to government officials, both delegations are currently engaging in indirect negotiations, with Pakistani diplomats facilitating communication between the two sides.

Indirect Talks Mark First Phase

The Iranian delegation arrived in Islamabad on Friday night, followed by the US delegation on Saturday morning. While both teams are staying at the same venue, discussions are not yet face-to-face. Instead, messages are being exchanged through intermediaries—a cautious but strategic approach aimed at building trust.

Officials suggest that if the initial phase yields positive outcomes, direct talks between US and Iranian representatives could soon follow.

Global Attention on Islamabad Talks

The international community is closely watching these negotiations, as they could significantly impact stability in the Middle East. Tensions between the US and Iran have remained high, particularly around strategic regions like the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump’s Strong Statements Add Pressure

Amid the ongoing talks, Donald Trump made strong claims on his platform Truth Social, stating that Iran is facing a severe military setback.

Trump alleged that Iran’s naval and air capabilities have been neutralized, with key infrastructure such as missile and drone facilities destroyed. He also claimed that US forces have begun clearing sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure safe global navigation.

Earlier, on April 8, Trump announced a temporary halt to US military actions following discussions with Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir. This pause in hostilities was described as a step toward enabling diplomatic dialogue.

Pakistan’s Role as Peace Facilitator

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the ceasefire development and invited both nations to Islamabad for negotiations aimed at resolving long-standing disputes. The current talks are a direct outcome of that diplomatic initiative.

Sharif also expressed optimism about achieving a peaceful resolution and praised both sides for agreeing to participate in dialogue.

Iran’s Conditions for Negotiation

Before the talks began, Iran reportedly set strict conditions, including:

  • A complete ceasefire in Lebanon
  • Unfreezing of Iranian assets held by the US

These demands highlight the complexity of the negotiations and the challenges ahead.

What Lies Ahead

As discussions continue under tight diplomatic protocols, the outcome remains uncertain. However, the initiation of talks itself signals a potential turning point in US-Iran relations.

Whether these negotiations lead to lasting peace or further complications will depend on the willingness of both sides to compromise and move beyond years of conflict.
