Nepal’s Gen Z Rallies Behind Balen: A New Era of Youth Power
नेपाली Gen Z मतदानमा अग्रसर: युवाहरूले Balen मा राखे भरोसा
Nepal is witnessing a historic moment as citizens head to the polls on Voting Day 2082. This election is the first since a youth-led movement last year challenged corruption and forced government changes. Many young voters, particularly Gen Z, are hoping for a new era of accountability, opportunity, and honest leadership.
Who Excites the Youth?
The millennial rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah, popularly known as Balen, has become the face of change for young voters. At 35, Balen is not technically Gen Z, but his actions and vision resonate deeply with younger citizens who are tired of traditional party politics.
Balen previously served as the mayor of Kathmandu, where he gained recognition for solving the city’s trash crisis. Today, he is running for the House of Representatives under the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) banner. His image as a dynamic, tech-savvy, and problem-solving leader appeals to a generation that values transparency and accountability.
Why Gen Z Supports Balen
Nepal’s youth have been frustrated for years by corruption, nepotism, and limited opportunities at home. Many have felt forced to seek work abroad. The violent crackdown on Gen Z protests last year, followed by widespread arson and destruction, further highlighted the need for change.
Sujan Sipai, a teacher from Bhaktapur, says:
“For many years, we have seen the same political parties, and they have not changed anything in Nepal. That’s why, this time, the entire country has stood up against corruption and for Balen.”
During the recent Holi festival, young voters celebrated with colors and chants of Balen’s name, signaling the strong youth support behind him.
Other Candidates and Youth Participation
While Balen and the RSP are attracting much of the youth attention, other parties are also fielding candidates. The RSP is running nine Gen Z candidates, several of whom were aides to Balen. Traditional parties like the Communist parties and the Nepali Congress have fewer Gen Z candidates, though they retain powerful political machinery.
Across the country, around 160 Gen Z candidates are contesting elections, many as independents, reflecting the broader desire for generational change.
Can Gen Z Transform Nepal?
The youth-led revolution of September 2025 moved rapidly. Young Nepalis protested corruption, nepotism, and social media restrictions, leading to widespread unrest. Security forces responded forcefully, and government buildings were burned in coordinated arson attacks. The Prime Minister at the time, K.P. Sharma Oli resigned amid the chaos.
Since then, progress has been slower than hoped. Investigations into the crackdown and unrest are incomplete, and many citizens remain concerned about accountability.
Voting Day 2082 represents an opportunity for Gen Z voters to directly influence the country’s future. By supporting candidates like Balen, they hope to bring transparency, fairness, and youth-focused policies to the forefront.
Why This Election Matters
For Gen Z and millennials, this election is about more than ballots. It is about:
-
Accountability – Holding leaders responsible for past failures.
-
Opportunity – Ensuring youth have access to jobs, education, and fair treatment.
-
Change – Replacing decades of entrenched political power with new ideas and leaders.
Every vote from young citizens signals their commitment to a Nepal where corruption is challenged, opportunities are created at home, and democracy is strengthened.
Final Words
Nepal’s youth are making their voices heard on Voting Day 2082. From Kathmandu to remote districts, young voters are lining up to vote for leaders like Balendra “Balen” Shah, who represent hope, change, and accountability.
