Lionel Messi to Receive UBA’s Highest Honor, Doctor Honoris Causa

Lionel Messi is set to receive the University of Buenos Aires’ highest honorary distinction, Doctor Honoris Causa, recognizing his football career, perseverance, humility and representation of Argentina.

Lionel Messi is set to receive the Doctor Honoris Causa, the highest honorary distinction awarded by the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), in recognition of his extraordinary football career and his broader influence as a representative of Argentina.

The UBA’s Superior Council unanimously approved the decision, honoring Messi’s professional journey and the values the university says he represents, including excellence, perseverance, humility and commitment to Argentina.

UBA Honors Lionel Messi’s Career

The University of Buenos Aires said Messi’s career has made a significant contribution to Argentina’s sporting identity. The university specifically highlighted his achievements with the Argentine national team, including the country’s 2022 FIFA World Cup victory.

The Doctor Honoris Causa is an honorary academic distinction awarded to individuals in recognition of their achievements and contributions. In Messi’s case, the university linked the honor not only to his success on the football field but also to the qualities it associates with his career and public representation of Argentina.

Messi to Receive the Honor on October 6

According to the UBA, the formal presentation of the distinction is scheduled for October 6, 2026, ahead of Messi’s expected farewell match for Argentina at the Monumental Stadium.

The timing adds particular significance to the ceremony, bringing together an academic honor and an important moment in Messi’s international career.

Another Major Recognition for Argentina’s Football Icon

Messi has collected numerous individual and team honors throughout his career, but the UBA recognition comes from outside the world of football.

By awarding him its highest honorary distinction, Argentina’s leading public university is recognizing a figure whose career has extended beyond sporting achievements. The university emphasized qualities such as perseverance, humility and national representation in explaining its decision.

The honor also places Messi among notable figures from different fields who have received the UBA’s Doctor Honoris Causa. The university recently gave the same distinction to Argentine writer and broadcaster Alejandro Dolina, highlighting the award’s use across different areas of public and cultural life.

Messi’s Legacy Continues to Grow

From his early career in Rosario to becoming Argentina’s captain and leading the national team to the 2022 World Cup title, Messi has built a career that has made him one of the most recognizable Argentine sporting figures worldwide.

The UBA’s decision adds another chapter to that legacy. While the Doctor Honoris Causa is not a traditional academic degree earned through university study, it represents the institution’s formal recognition of an individual's achievements and contribution.

For Messi, the distinction will provide a unique moment away from the football pitch as he receives one of Argentina’s most prestigious university honors.

The University of Buenos Aires is scheduled to present Lionel Messi with the Doctor Honoris Causa on October 6, marking another major recognition of his career and his connection with Argentina.
