Nepal Suffer Historic 10-Wicket Defeat Against Italy in T20 World Cup

Nepal endured a historic 10-wicket defeat to Italy in their Group C clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, marking their heaviest loss by wickets in T20 International history.

After being bundled out for 123 in 19.3 overs, Nepal had no answers to Italy’s dominant opening pair, Anthony Mosca and Justin Mosca. The duo chased down the 124-run target comfortably in just 12.4 overs, finishing the match with 44 balls remaining. This was the first time Nepal have lost a T20I match by a 10-wicket margin.

Italy’s triumph was powered by a sensational 124-run opening partnership off only 76 balls, scoring at an impressive run rate of 9.78. Anthony Mosca smashed an unbeaten 62 off 32 deliveries, hammering three fours and six towering sixes at a remarkable strike rate of 193.75. Justin Mosca provided solid support with an unbeaten 60 off 44 balls, including five boundaries and three sixes.

Italy raced to 68 without loss in the powerplay and reached 97 by the end of 10 overs, effectively putting the contest beyond Nepal’s reach midway through the chase. Nepal’s bowlers struggled to create any breakthroughs as the Mosca brothers dominated from start to finish.

Earlier, Nepal’s innings never truly gained momentum after losing the toss and being asked to bat first. Opener Kushal Bhurtel was dismissed early for 5 off 10 balls. Although Nepal managed 46/1 at the end of the powerplay, regular wickets slowed their progress, leaving them at 67/3 at the halfway stage.

Captain Rohit Kumar Paudel played a quick cameo of 23 from 14 balls, striking two sixes before falling to Crishan Kalugamage. Aasif Sheikh scored 20 off 20 balls before being stumped off Ben Manenti, while Aarif Sheikh top-scored with 27 off 24 deliveries, hitting three boundaries.

Dipendra Singh Airee added 17 off 18 balls but failed to find the ropes. Lokesh Bam managed just 3 runs, while Gulshan Kumar Jha scored 3 off 4 balls. Nandan Yadav was run out without scoring. Karan KC provided late resistance with an unbeaten 18 off 11 balls, including a four and a six. He shared a 21-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Sandeep Lamichhane (5 off 7). Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi was run out for a duck as Nepal were bowled out three deliveries short of their full quota.

Italy’s bowling unit maintained discipline throughout the innings. Crishan Kalugamage was named Player of the Match for his outstanding spell of 3/18 in four overs. Ben Manenti delivered an economical 2/9 from his four overs, while Ali Hasan, JJ Smuts, and Jaspreet Singh picked up one wicket apiece. Grant Stewart was the only bowler without a wicket.

Nepal’s difficulty in defending modest totals continues to be a concern. Apart from their successful defence of 117 against Oman in February 2022, the team has failed to defend nine targets under 123. Including this defeat, Nepal have been unable to defend totals of 140 or less on five occasions, with their only successful defence of 140 coming against the UAE last October.

On a batting-friendly surface like Wankhede, Nepal’s total of 123 was always going to be challenging to defend. Italy capitalized brilliantly, sealing a commanding victory in their maiden World Cup appearance.
