Chitwan Explores New Tourism Potential with Hiking and Evening Safaris

Tourism in Chitwan is set to expand beyond its traditional hotspots, as officials move forward with plans to develop hiking routes and evening safari experiences in the Barandabhar forest area.

The Division Forest Office is currently studying a 12-kilometer route from Tikhauli to nearby community forests, aiming to create new attractions for visitors.

Moving Beyond Traditional Destinations

For years, tourism in Chitwan has mainly focused on places like Sauraha. However, officials now believe that surrounding community forests also have strong potential to attract tourists.

Local authorities say these areas, with their natural landscapes, lakes, and grasslands, can become new destinations for eco-tourism in Nepal.

Field Study Highlights Potential

A field study was recently conducted with the involvement of local stakeholders, conservation groups, and nature guides.

During the observation, teams assessed:

• Wildlife and bird species

• Forest vegetation and biodiversity

• Safety and security arrangements

• Infrastructure and possible viewpoints

The study also identified nearby areas connected to river systems as promising zones for nature-based tourism activities.

Evening Safaris to Offer Unique Experience

One of the key highlights of the plan is the introduction of evening safaris, which are not permitted inside Chitwan National Park. Officials believe community forests can provide a safe alternative where visitors can observe wildlife during evening hours, creating a new and unique tourism experience.

An action plan is currently being prepared to manage these activities responsibly.

Community Forests Focus on Tourism Growth

Local community forest groups are shifting their focus toward tourism-based income rather than relying only on traditional resources. Efforts are being made to improve visitor facilities, including places for tourists to stay overnight and enjoy the natural environment.
