Kathmandu Police Arrest 18, Including Notorious Gangster Sanubhai
Kathmandu police have arrested 18 individuals, including the well-known gangster Sanubhai, as part of an ongoing operation to curb criminal activities in the capital.
According to Ramesh Thapa, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, Sanubhai—whose real name is Yuvraj Gurung—was apprehended from the Samakhusi area on Saturday night.
The arrests were made during a targeted police crackdown that began on Friday night, focusing on individuals suspected of involvement in organized crime and illegal activities. Authorities had already detained 17 people on Friday, and investigations into their activities are currently underway.
Sanubhai, 33, originally from Kakani Rural Municipality-5 in Nuwakot and currently residing in Tokha, has a long history of criminal involvement. He has been arrested multiple times in the past and is widely known among law enforcement agencies. Reports indicate that this latest arrest marks at least the eighth time he has been taken into custody.
He was previously associated with Kumar Shrestha, also known as “Ghaite,” a notorious criminal who was killed in a police encounter. Following Ghaite’s death, Sanubhai reportedly increased his security measures, often being seen wearing a bulletproof jacket due to fears for his safety.
Police records show that Sanubhai had earlier been arrested in 2072 (BS) in Nuwakot on charges related to illegal arms and ammunition. During that incident, he was also found wearing a bulletproof vest, highlighting the seriousness of his criminal activities and the threats surrounding him.
Authorities further revealed that Sanubhai is believed to have close links with Samirman Singh Basnet, who is currently serving time in prison.
The latest operation reflects the police department’s intensified efforts to maintain law and order in Kathmandu and dismantle networks involved in organized crime. Officials have stated that further investigations are ongoing, and additional arrests may follow as the crackdown continues.
