Committee Formed to Investigate Widebody Aircraft Irregularities at Nepal Airlines
The Government of Nepal has formed a five-member investigation committee to probe alleged irregularities and financial losses linked to the widebody aircraft procurement at Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC). The move comes amid growing concerns over transparency and accountability in the national flag carrier’s operations.
According to Ministry spokesperson Jaynarayan Acharya, the committee is headed by Joint Secretary Mukesh Dangol. The decision to form the committee was made at the Secretary level on Thursday (Chaitra 5), with a clear mandate to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter.
The committee has been tasked with collecting evidence, carrying out in-depth studies, and investigating potential corruption and financial mismanagement related to the widebody aircraft deal. Officials have stated that the investigation will follow a defined Terms of Reference (TOR), ensuring a structured and transparent review process.
As part of its responsibilities, the committee must prepare and submit a comprehensive report within 30 days. The report is expected not only to highlight findings but also to include a practical action plan for implementation, aimed at addressing any identified irregularities and preventing similar issues in the future.
Sources indicate that the formation of this committee follows increased political and public pressure. Notably, Sudhan Gurung, a Member of the House of Representatives from Gorkha Constituency No. 1, had submitted a memorandum demanding a thorough investigation into the widebody aircraft deal.
The widebody procurement has long been a subject of controversy in Nepal, with repeated concerns raised about financial losses and possible misconduct. This latest investigation is seen as a crucial step toward ensuring accountability and restoring public trust in Nepal Airlines Corporation.
