TU Cricket Ground After Two Consecutive Days of Rainfall: Latest Conditions in Kirtipur
The Tribhuvan University (TU) International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur is facing challenging weather conditions following two consecutive days of rainfall in the Kathmandu Valley. With rain continuing since Thursday night and persisting throughout Friday, the ground has remained under protective covers as preparations continue for the Nepal Premier League (NPL) matches.
The rainfall has raised concerns among cricket fans, players, and tournament organizers, as wet weather could affect the playing surface and disrupt the scheduled fixtures. Ground staff have taken precautionary measures by covering the field with tarpaulins to protect the pitch and outfield from further exposure to rain.
Rainfall Raises Concerns Ahead of NPL Matches
The continuous rainfall has created uncertainty around the NPL fixtures scheduled for Saturday, October 31. Two matches are scheduled at the TU International Cricket Ground, with defending champions Lumbini Lions set to face Chitwan Rhinos in the afternoon, followed by Sudurpaschim Royals taking on Biratnagar Kings in the evening.
The first match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 PM, while the second match is set for 5:00 PM. However, persistent rainfall has raised doubts about whether both matches can take place as planned.
According to weather-related reports, light rain could continue until Saturday evening, although conditions are expected to improve later in the afternoon. The final decision regarding the matches will depend on the weather and the condition of the ground.
Ground Staff Take Precautions to Protect the Playing Surface
Protecting the pitch and outfield is a major priority during prolonged rainfall. Covers help prevent rainwater from directly reaching the playing surface and reduce the risk of further water accumulation.
However, even after rainfall stops, ground conditions may take time to recover. The outfield needs to be sufficiently dry and safe for players, while the pitch must meet the required playing standards before the umpires can allow a match to begin.
The ground staff will therefore play an important role in preparing the venue for the scheduled fixtures, depending on how quickly the weather improves.
What Happens If Rain Affects the Matches?
Under NPL playing conditions, at least five overs must be bowled to each side for a result to be possible. If rainfall prevents a match from reaching the required conditions, it may be abandoned, with both teams sharing one point each.
With the tournament still in its early stages, every point could prove important in the race for the playoffs. A rain-affected match would therefore have implications beyond the day's schedule.
For now, cricket supporters will be hoping that the weather improves and the ground becomes suitable for play, allowing the NPL action to continue without further interruptions.
The latest reports indicate that the ground remains under protective covers amid persistent rainfall. The final status of Saturday's matches depends on weather conditions and the official ground inspection.
