Nepal’s Political Upheaval in 2082: Janji Movement Sparks Leadership Changes

The Janji Movement in Nepal in 2082 triggered government changes, paving the way for a new Prime Minister and the rise of the Rastriya Swatantra Party in the elections.

The year 2082 was marked by significant political unrest in Nepal. The country’s political landscape shifted dramatically following a harsh government crackdown on the Janji Movement on Bhadra 23, which drew nationwide attention and criticism.

The protests led to the resignation of then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, making way for political changes that resulted in the country seeing two different Prime Ministers within the same year.

An interim government was established under former Chief Justice Sushila Karki on Bhadra 27. This government dissolved the existing House of Representatives and scheduled new elections for Falgun 21.

The elections saw a major reshuffling of Nepal’s political hierarchy. Established parties such as the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, Communist Party of Nepal, RPP, and various Madhes-centric parties were largely sidelined. The newly formed Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) emerged as the dominant force, winning nearly two-thirds of the seats with 182 victories. Senior RSP leader Balendra Shah is now preparing to take the oath of office as the country’s next Prime Minister.

In the aftermath of the unrest, a high-level investigation was conducted by a commission led by former Justice Gauribahadur Karki to examine the events of Bhadra 23 and 24. Although the commission submitted its report to the government, it has not been formally released to the public. Media sources indicate that the report recommends prison sentences of three to ten years for key figures, including former Prime Minister Oli and then Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, citing criminal responsibility. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the report’s neutrality, noting that it does not address the destruction and unrest that occurred on Bhadra 24.
