India Responds to PM Balen Shah’s Remarks on Nepal–India Border Dispute

India has responded to remarks made by Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah on the Nepal–India border dispute, reiterating that all issues will be resolved through existing bilateral mechanisms without third-party involvement.

India Says Border Issues to Be Resolved Bilaterally

India has officially responded to recent remarks made by Nepal Prime Minister Balen Shah regarding the long-standing Nepal–India border dispute.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), represented by spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, stated that India has taken note of the comments and reaffirmed that all border-related matters between the two countries are being handled through established bilateral mechanisms.

“No Role for Third Party,” Says India

Addressing media queries, the MEA spokesperson emphasized that:

  • India and Nepal are already engaged in structured bilateral talks
  • There is no requirement for third-party involvement
  • Existing diplomatic mechanisms remain the preferred channel for resolution

He also stated that approximately 98% of the India–Nepal border demarcation has already been completed.

Issues in Specific Border Areas

According to India, certain unresolved issues remain due to:

  • Encroachment concerns in “no man’s land” areas
  • Natural changes in the course of the Gandak River, affecting boundary alignment
  • Deployment of security personnel in sensitive zones

India reiterated that such matters are being addressed through joint mechanisms between both governments.

Background: Balen Shah’s Statement Sparks Debate

The controversy began after remarks made by Balen Shah during a parliamentary session following recent elections.

He stated that:

  • Nepal has also encroached upon Indian territory in some areas
  • The Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani disputes should be resolved through dialogue
  • Both countries should involve historians and survey experts for fair resolution
  • Diplomatic communication has already been exchanged between Nepal and India
  • Discussions have also referenced historical boundary issues dating back to British India

These remarks have triggered political debate in both countries.

Nepal–India Border Dispute Context

The Nepal–India border issue includes long-standing disagreements over:

  • Kalapani region
  • Lipulekh Pass
  • Limpiyadhura area

Both countries maintain diplomatic engagement to resolve boundary differences through peaceful negotiations.

India’s response reinforces its position that all border disputes with Nepal will continue to be addressed through bilateral dialogue without external mediation, while Nepal’s leadership continues to call for technical and historical review of disputed regions.
