Galaxy S26 Ultra Release Date: Samsung's Delay Bring Risks And Rewards

According to reports, Samsung's first Galaxy Unpacked event of 2026, which was supposed to introduce the Galaxy S26 series, has been rescheduled from mid-January to late February.
Galaxy S26 Ultra Release Date: Samsung's Delay Bring Risks And Rewards

Samsung hosted its Galaxy Unpacked launch events in January of 2024 and 2025. The Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26+, and Galaxy S26 Ultra are anticipated to be unveiled at the first Galaxy Unpacked event of 2026. However, it has been reported that the anticipated mid-January date has been rescheduled for late February.

What problems does Samsung have as a result of this delay?

Why Is The Galaxy S26 Ultra Delay Occurring?

Three phones the Galaxy S26 Pro, the Galaxy S26 Edge, and the Galaxy S26 Ultra were the foundation of Samsung's original 2026 strategy. The former phones seem to have been derailed by market conditions, but the latter is still in the portfolio. Due to poor sales of the Galaxy S25 Edge, the Galaxy S26 Edge would not be as successful as a flagship model.

The Galaxy S26 Pro was set to raise the base specifications of the first model, with a new camera system one of the key upgrades. This would have increased the base price above that of the Galaxy S25. Apple’s launch of the iPhone 17 at the same price as the iPhone 16, and its retail success, appear to have pushed Samsung back toward a lower-cost entry model: the Galaxy S26.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra Delay's Risk

Samsung will probably miss the end of the Chinese New Year, a time of higher sales in the Asian markets, if the announcement is postponed until late February, pushing the retail release into early March. In the short term, the Galaxy S26 family is probably going to fall short when Q1 sales are revealed and a direct comparison with the Galaxy 25 phones is made.

The delayed release of the handsets gives rival manufacturers more time to get their flagship smartphones on sale and into consumers' hands in the first two months of the year. Smartphones such as the OnePlus 15, Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Honor Magic8 Pro (all powered by the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5) will have more time to tell their story and be picked up by consumers; and with that, the potential buyers of the Galaxy 26 Ultra will shrink.

Samsung will still be launching ahead of Mobile World Congress, which starts on March 2, 2026. Still, there will be less time for the media to cover the launch, the new handsets, and the new tenets of Galay AI before they head to Barcelona to cover Samsung’s competition. Samsung still sets the tone of discussions, but there is less time to bed these views in; there’s much more for tech journalists to write about after a February Galaxy Unpacked than after a January Galaxy Unpacked.

The Reward Of The Galaxy S26 Ultra Delay

The delay is not without its benefits for Samsung, and the South Korean company, if pressed, would likely frame the delay as launching when everything is ready rather than a peedy launch to meet expectations et by previous Galaxy Unpacked events.

Samsung has recently opened up OneUI 8.5 for beta testing. This will likely be the version of OneUI that launches with the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The longer that 8.5 stays in beta, the longer it can be tested and polished before a full public release, the better both the initial software experience will be, and the air of “release now, patch later” will be prevalent on the discussion forums and community boards - something we have seen on some recent high-profile flagship launches from other manufacturers.

Some initial specifications of the Galaxy S26 Ultra have been increased, as shown in regulatory filings with agencies such as China’s 3C. This indicates certification for 60W wired charging on the S26 Ultra, up from the 45W seen on the Galaxy S25. The extra few weeks could have allowed time for some last-minute engineering tweaks, and the sudden increase to 60W suggests this may have been a small consolation for the delay.

Waiting For The Galaxy S26 Ultra

When Samsung launches the Galaxy S26 Ultra, it will be seen as a powerhouse smartphone, poised to lead the way in 2026. It will not launch into a vacuum; part of the S26 Ultra's definition will be what it launches against. A later launch means more time for competitors to establish themselves, less time to set the tone ahead of the industry's largest annual gathering, MWC, and a smaller window for first-quarter sales.
